Hemp THC Drink Dosing Guide
Getting the dose right is the difference between a great experience and a forgettable (or uncomfortable) one. The good news is that hemp THC drinks make this easier than almost any other cannabis product. Every can is labeled with a specific milligram count, and most brands use lab-tested nano-emulsion formulas that deliver consistent, predictable effects.
If you're coming from the world of traditional cannabis edibles, where dosing can feel like guesswork, drinks are a welcome change. If you're completely new to THC in any format, this guide will help you find a starting point and work from there.
The universal advice: start with less than you think you need. You can always have more. You cannot un-drink what you've already had.
Dosage Tiers
ShopKanna does not carry any product with more than 10mg of THC per serving. That's a deliberate choice. The sweet spot for hemp beverages is in the low-dose range, and the products we carry reflect that. If you live in a legal recreational state, there are high-dose options in your local dispensary, but that isn't what we sell. Instead, all products offered for sale on ShopKanna contain only federally-legal levels of THC, derived from hemp, and sold only in states where hemp is legal for adults to order and consume. All of our products range from 1 mg to a 10 mg cap per serving. Here's how the spectrum breaks down.
Microdose: 1-2mg
Most people won't feel "high" at this dose. What they will feel is a subtle shift in mood, a loosening of tension, a sense that the day's stress has moved a few feet further away. It's gentle enough that you might question whether it's doing anything at all, which is exactly the point for a first experience.
This range works well for people who are curious but cautious, people who want to take the edge off during the day without any real impairment, or anyone who's tried cannabis before and didn't love the intensity. Effects typically arrive within 15-30 minutes and last 1-2 hours.
Low Dose: 3-5mg
This is where most regular consumers settle in. At 3-5mg, the effects are noticeable but manageable. You'll feel relaxed, a bit more social, more present in whatever you're doing. Your thinking stays clear, your coordination is fine, and you can carry on a normal conversation without anyone knowing you've had anything unless you tell them. People feel more free to "session" or have a couple of drinks in this range either by themselves or in a social setting.
5mg has become something of a standard serving size across the hemp beverage industry, similar to how a 12oz beer or 5oz glass of wine became the standard serving for alcohol. Most brands design their products around this dose. Effects arrive within 15-30 minutes and typically last 2-3 hours.
Moderate: 6-10mg
At this level, the effects are more pronounced. Body relaxation deepens, the mental shift is more noticeable, and you may find yourself less sharp in conversation or less inclined to do anything requiring focus. For many people, this is a stay-home, put-on-a-movie, enjoy-the-evening kind of dose.
If you're new to THC beverages, this is not the place to start. Even if you've consumed cannabis in other forms, the absorption profile of nano-emulsified drinks is different enough that your expectations from edibles or flower may not translate directly. Effects can take 20-45 minutes to arrive and may last 3-5 hours depending on your body and what you've eaten.
10mg is the highest dose ShopKanna carries, and we recommend it only for people who have already established their tolerance at lower levels.
Factors That Affect How a Dose Feels
Two people can drink the same 5mg seltzer and have noticeably different experiences. That's normal, and it's worth understanding why.
Body weight and composition play a role, but not as straightforward a role as most people assume. A larger person may need a higher dose to feel the same effects, but metabolism, body fat percentage, and individual body chemistry matter just as much as raw weight. Two people at the same weight can respond very differently to the same milligram amount.
Tolerance is the biggest variable. If you use cannabis regularly in any form, you'll likely need more to feel the same effects as someone who's brand new. Conversely, if you haven't used cannabis in months or years, don't assume your old tolerance still applies. It resets faster than most people expect.
Whether you've eaten changes the experience significantly. An empty stomach means faster absorption and stronger effects from the same dose. A full stomach slows things down and softens the peak. Neither is right or wrong, but if you're trying a dose for the first time, eating a normal meal beforehand gives you a smoother, more predictable baseline.
Other substances can amplify or alter the effects. Alcohol and THC compound each other in ways that are hard to predict, and we don't recommend combining them, particularly if you're still learning your THC tolerance. Caffeine can sometimes increase anxiety at higher THC doses, something to keep in mind if you're having a hemp seltzer alongside your afternoon coffee.
The Most Common Mistake: Redosing Too Quickly
This applies to every THC product, not just drinks. You have a can, you don't feel anything after 15 minutes, so you open another one. Then both kick in at once and you're well past where you wanted to be.
Most nano-emulsified drinks take 10-20 minutes to kick in, but it can take longer depending on what you've eaten, your individual metabolism, and the specific product. Wait at least 30 minutes before deciding you need more. If you've had a 5mg drink and genuinely feel nothing after 45 minutes, then it's reasonable to have another. But do not stack two drinks in the first 20 minutes because you're impatient. That's the single most reliable way to overshoot your target.
If You've Had More Than You Wanted
It happens, even to experienced consumers. The most important thing to know: you will be fine. At the doses found in commercial hemp beverages (10mg and under), nobody is having a medical emergency. The effects will pass. It may be a bit uncomfortable for a while, but it is temporary.
What helps: drink water, eat something, find a comfortable place to sit or lie down, put on something familiar and calming (a show, music, whatever works for you), and breathe slowly. If you have CBD on hand, it can help take the edge off THC's effects. The peak of the discomfort will pass within 30-60 minutes, and you'll gradually return to normal.
What doesn't help: trying to "walk it off," taking a cold shower, or panicking about it. Just ride it out. At doses under 10mg, you're typically back to baseline within 3-5 hours at the absolute longest, and usually much sooner.
Where to Start
If you're new, pick a drink in the 2-5mg range. Sip half the can, set a timer for 30 minutes, and see how you feel. You can always finish it or open a second one later. The goal isn't to find the maximum you can handle. It's to find the amount that makes an ordinary evening a little better, and the only way to get there is to start conservatively and adjust over a few sessions.
